Christmas Quipper 2

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” -Matty-Boy Chapter 2, verses 1&2

Let’s take a look as to who was present around the birth of Jesus: Mary; Joseph; animals; shepherds and Iranian Astrologers. Now let’s just make a note as to who was not there: the big-wig religious leaders of the day. Which in hindsight is unusual considering the 2000-year-old-tradition bent on the opinion that Jewish religion held the exclusive rights to God Inc. Yet no-one of the ‘Cloth’ was to be found at His birthday.

But leaders from an entirely different belief system were present around the birth of the Saviour of the World. And their presence was beckoned by the ability to read signs storied in stars and not in a book. What?! The Saviour was found apart from the Rule Book? The Magi and their fascination for truth, goodness and rightness led them to the birth of the wonderful Righteous One. These astrological leaders are now enshrined in Christian choruses the world over.

The Christmas Story is an emphatic statement that God will not move in our religiously constructed boxes. God eats Derrida for breakfast. More than we would like to think or admit, God is happy to play outside the confines we define as normal Christianity. The Magi offer inspired leadership to show us that God can be clearly found in religion and cultures outside of our own.

That’s a wrap, so unpack that.

Merry Xmas,
